Self-portrait. The piece of wood used in this work was salvaged from the basement of my parents’ house located on a crossroad once considered “neutral territory” by two opposing street gangs, the Latin Kings and the 2-6 in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood. This piece, entitled Neutral Territory comments on the constant and often desperate need to go inward for a sense of peace and protection –an inner sanctuary –from a neighborhood riddled with gang violence.
